KLANG

Back in 2015, I had a look at my growing setup of vintage keyboards and felt the urge to share my fascination for these instruments with the world.
These instruments are so inspiring and seem to carry their own kind of soul.

So, in addition to bringing them to their best use on albums and on stage, subordinating to the bigger picture of a musical idea, I wanted to create a place to put them right into the spotlight, for the sake of their own essence.
That's when I started the Klangteppich series on my YouTube channel, featuring jams and compositions – oftentimes with one single synthesizer and nothing else.

That was so much fun that I wanted to go even deeper into it. Why not go crazy on the "One-Synth-Challenge" idea and create a series of whole albums, using just one single synth for each one? The idea of KLANG (German for sound) was born.

I wanted to capture the essence of each synth I feel drawn to by composing pieces dedicated to the particular instrument, as well as freely improvising without any guidelines or prepared ideas, to create space for a resonance to unfold between the intentions of the synth's creator, me as a player, inspired by the presence of the instrument and you as a listener, merging it all with your own experiences and emotions.

OBERHEIM EIGHT VOICE

The first specimen for this album series is an absolute dream-synth of mine (and many others):

The Oberheim Eight Voice.

In the 1970s, when most synthesizers were only capable of playing one note at a time, Tom Oberheim created some of the first true polyphonic synthesizers by stacking up to eight of his famous Synthesizer Expander Modules (SEM) together with a then groundbreaking digital keyboard.

This concept of having eight complete synthesizers joining their individual voices is very unique in both workflow and the resulting sound.

KLANG | Oberheim Eight Voice

I’m proud to share 7 tracks of sonic love for this one-of-a-kind monster. Two compositions are dedicated to the sound and characteristics of the Oberheim Eight Voice and five of the tracks are free improvisations, inspired by the presence and sound of the instrument, created in the moment when sitting in front of the Oberheim, merging with its presence.

Recorded at GForce Software’s synthesizer studio in England – on generous invitation of Dave Spiers (pictured here with a lucky me, whose bucket-list-dream of ever playing an Oberheim Four Voice had been overdelivered by 100% – I’m still full of Love and Gratitude, Dave!).

Mixed with countless analogue dreams by the fabulous Antonio Pulli at Saal3 – Nils Frahm’s studio at Funkhaus, Berlin (It was once again a mesmerizing experience to attend and watch the magic happen – Thank you Antonio!).
