O
You probably wondered about the enigmatic title of today’s song, “O”. The obvious thought that the O might be a reference to the Oberheim Eight Voice Synthesizer which this album is all about is entirely wrong.
I’ll probably never tell this in public, but for you taking this trip with me, I’ll reveal the true meaning:
When I showed my first sketches for the album to a close friend, she was immediately hooked to this piece in particular. In preparation for my trip to England, I had tried to familiarise myself with programming and playing the Eight Voice using GForce OB-E, the software recreation of that synthesizer. I came up with this sound one night and recorded an improvisation, fascinated by the waves of sound floating up and down from the silence and darkness of my room.
The first comment of my friend was: “Wow, this is an accurate acoustic representation of an Opium trip. These waves flowing through your body and mind, the warmth, the piece…”
So, she urged me to put it on the album and call it “O” – as in Opium.
Of course it seemed awkward to create an album celebrating the glory of a rare synthesizer gem and then play a whole piece with the software simulation of it – as accurate as it may be. So I transcribed my own improvisation and later recreated the sound on the real thing. That’s why you see me playing from sheet music in the video.
As a bonus, you can download both the sheet music and the OB-E patch. If you’re a musician, you can try yourself and post your version!
What do you think about my friend’s interpretation of the piece? If you have experience with that drug, can you relate? Let me know in the comments! 😉

Thanks for another moving piece of music. Relaxing and letting everything go is the feeling I get when listning to it. Amazing to see you play all these different sounds and improvisations on one amazing instrument.
Enjoyed it a lot!
Btw never used drugs so cant relate to that feeling.
Cheers bart
Thank you for Back to the top I liked well bravo and for
O – transcription.pdf cool !
Never used Opium so can neither confirm nor deny how the trip would feel.
I do feel this piece enveloping like a big warm hug.
Thank you.
I have never been into drugs, so no experience of opium, but I do see a Chinese doctor for different treatments now and then. She’s just amazing with her needles and acupuncture and I can somewhat relate to the opium experience since I always float away into different spaces when I’m under her needles. I guess what I’m saying is that I would have named your piece N for needles, instead of O 😉
